It's not quite there... Then i realized i was going about it the wrong way, which brought me one step closer to what i was looking for.
Mental Ray (IBL using a Nebula i cooked up in photoshop):

Still missing an Atmosphere Shader and Stars have yet to be placed.

Too Red.

I am quite happy with the results of this last one, though i know there is always room for improvement/enhancements.

Not too bad, i am still undecided on the color of those smaller mushrooms. Sometimes i need to sleep on it to be sure, having fresh eyes on it helps.

Pilot and Dragon (Work in Progress)

Still raw in maya, working on a few changes and getting all the mapping done. At the moment i'm not quite sure yet what colors i'd want him to have, though i've always liked the hint of Teal or Cyan when it came to space suits, ships, weapons, etc. (the color combo of black/white with teal just feels futuristic to me). (65%Complete)

Design: I wanted a large creature with similar characteristics of a Dragon, mainly epic sized and has lived for thousands of years. Its unique head influenced by the great Terrasaurs that once ruled the skies. The creature needed something that gave it the edge in surviving harsh environments that has little to no moisture, a Fungus with the ability to conserve water like cactuses.
